The original surveys: Frost, Blooming Grove and Dresden

Before there were farms here there were surveys. From 1838 the Republic, and then the State of Texas, paid settlers, soldiers and the families of the dead in land, with certificates for so many acres. A certificate named no place. Its holder had to find open ground, have it surveyed and get the field notes to Austin before anyone else did.

The map shows the original surveys between Frost, Blooming Grove and Dresden drawn over the General Land Office’s 1924 county map. Each has its own page: who it was granted to and why, who it passed to, who ran the lines, and when it was patented, with a link to the Land Office’s own scanned file.

Most of this ground came from settlers’ headrights. About one survey in six came from soldiers’ bounty and donation warrants. Nearly half the certificates changed hands before the patent issued.
