What the file shows
Ruth McFadden held a certificate (No. 4/97) issued by the Commissioner of the General Land Office on 28 August 1856, described in the entry as a colony certificate. On 11 March 1857 the locators B. R. and J. B. Tyus entered 227 acres of it on the waters of Mill Creek near the Ellis-Navarro line, and deputy surveyor Milton Wright surveyed the tract on 3 April 1857, about 18 miles west of Corsicana, on the south line of A. J. Phoenix's 640 acres. The field notes were recorded in Book W p. 8 and filed in May 1857, and the patent (No. 81, Vol. 24) issued to McFadden as original grantee in March 1859, delivered to Amos Merrill(?).

Also in the file
- The land was located not by Ruth McFadden herself but by the Tyus brothers (B. R. and J. B. Tyus), professional locators who filed the entry in their own names using part of her certificate — and J. B. Tyus then carried the chain.
- The certificate is called a 'Colony Certificate' even though the file is classed as a Robertson third-class headright.
- A woman holding a land certificate in her own name; the patent went to her as original grantee in 1859.
- The patent was delivered to a third party, Amos Merrill(?), not to McFadden.
