The original surveys: Barry and Emhouse
The map shows the original surveys around Barry and Emhouse, north-east of Blooming Grove and west of Corsicana, drawn over the General Land Office’s 1924 county map. Each has its own page: who it was granted to and why, who it passed to, who ran the lines, and when it was patented, with every page of the Land Office’s file.
More than half of this ground came from third-class headrights, the certificates of the later settlers. About one survey in four came from soldiers’ bounty warrants. About half the certificates changed hands before the patent issued.
Grey dashed lines are the other surveys on this ground. Those around Frost, Blooming Grove and Dresden already have pages and open from the map; the rest will follow.
