What the file shows
Joseph Bunch earned a 640-acre bounty for six months' army service from 1 June to 1 December 1836. David R. Mitchell surveyed it on Briar Creek in March 1846 on the old Poe warrant 948, and the State reissued the certificate as No. 1532 in February 1854. The patent issued on 4 August 1854 and was handed to C. M. Winkler.
The certificate
bounty warrant (Republic of Texas army service, 6 months), reissued by the State, No. 1532 (replacing Republic warrant No. 948), 640 acres, James S. Gillett, Adjutant General, State of Texas, Austin, 1854-02-23 (approved 1854-02-24).
Joseph Bunch served faithfully and honorably in the army of the Republic of Texas for six months, from 1 June 1836 until 1 December 1836, and was honorably discharged; entitled to 640 acres of bounty land

The patent
4 Aug 1854, No. 820, Vol. 6, to Joseph Bunch (jacket: 'by assee'), delivered to C. M. Winkler, 12 Aug 1854.
Also in the file
- The survey was made in 1846 on an 1836 Republic warrant (No. 948, issued by Paymaster General Geo. W. Poe); the field notes were filed in the Land Office on 24 August 1853, but the certificate now on file was issued by the State Adjutant General only in February 1854 'in lieu of' the cancelled No. 948.
- The jacket says Joseph Bunch 'by assee' although the file contains no transfer, and the patent index lists Bunch himself as patentee.
- The patent was delivered to C. M. Winkler, an Austin agent, eight days after it issued.
- The date of Bunch's discharge (1 December 1836) is five days before the Poe warrant (6 December 1836).
- Same survey day and recording page as the adjoining William Miller survey (abstract 562): both were made 5 March 1846 by D. R. Mitchell with the same chain carriers and recorded in Book E at pp. 408 and 409.
- Index says certificate 1532, patent 4 Aug 1854, No. 820 Vol. 6: matches.
