What the file shows
Richard Sanders held Mercer's Colony certificate No. 231 for 320 acres, issued at Corsicana in April 1850. D. R. Mitchell surveyed it on Briar Creek about four miles northwest of town in June 1850. In February 1851 Sanders bound himself to R. N. White to convey the land, and the patent issued to White as assignee in September 1852.
The certificate
Mercer's Colony certificate (3rd class), No. 231, 320 acres, John M. Crockett, Commissioner of Mercer's Colony, Corsicana, 18 Apr 1850.
Entitles Richard Sanders to 320 acres to be located on vacant land within the limits of the colony of Charles Fenton Mercer and his Associates, he having taken the oath and made the proof required by law of his citizenship
Changes of hand

White; he has sold his headright certificate for 320 acres on Briar Creek, a branch of Chambers Creek, adjoining Elijah Sanders' 320-acre survey on the N.E., (Gholston?) on the S.E. and James Bunch's(?) survey on the N.W.; he will make White a deed when the Land Office issues patents on Mercer's Colony certificates. Filed for record 12 o'clock, 22 Feb 1851.

The patent
23 Sep 1852, No. 1144, Vol. 6, to R. N. White, assignee, delivered to not stated.
Also in the file
- Patent issued to R. N. White as assignee, but the file's transfer is only a $500 bond to make title, not a deed; White was also the County Court clerk who took the acknowledgment of Sanders' bond.
- The witness's affidavit about the bond was taken more than a year later (19 June 1852), apparently to support the assignment before patenting.
- Neighbouring Elijah Sanders also had an adjoining 320-acre survey, so the two Sanders surveys are easy to confuse.
- Surname spelled Sanders, Sandres and Saunders on the jacket and docket.
- Certificate is dated 18 April 1850; the survey was June 1850, but patent did not issue until September 1852.
