What the file shows
The heirs of Allen M. Moore received Mercer's Colony certificate No. 1146 for 320 acres at Corsicana in October 1850. Deputy surveyor J. M. Eliot located it at the head of Briar Creek, about 8 miles north-west of Corsicana, in May 1854 next to N. C. Cook's survey. The papers were filed on 3 August 1854 and the patent issued on 21 September 1855.
The certificate
Mercer's Colony certificate (3rd class, Robertson), to heirs, No. 1146, 320 acres, John M. Crockett, Commissioner of Mercer's Colony, Corsicana, 22 Oct 1850.
The heirs of Allen M. Moore, having made the proof required by law of his citizenship in the colony, are entitled to 320 acres to be located on any vacant land within the limits of Charles Fenton Mercer's colony

- Index says patent 21 Sep 1855, No. 186, Vol. 12, 320 acres to Allen M. Moore; the jacket agrees.
- The certificate was issued in October 1850 'to the heirs of' Allen M. Moore, meaning Moore had died, yet the index and survey name Moore himself as the grantee.
- The field notes call the survey 'for A. M. Moore' and the back is marked 'Adm. fld of D. R. Mitchell'(?), pointing to an administrator or deputy filing on the heirs' behalf.
- The certificate was held nearly four years before location (May 1854) and filed on 3 August 1854.
