What the file shows
John Bowie held a 369-acre certificate issued in San Augustine County in 1838. In June 1870 Navarro County surveyor B. W. Bailey located two small pieces of its balance, 62 acres on Chambers Creek and 28 acres on Richland Creek. Both were patented to Bowie by early January 1871.
The certificate
augmentation certificate (balance), headright 1st class, No. 135, 369 (balance located here: 62 acres and 28 acres), Board of Commissioners for San Augustine County, San Augustine County, 1 Feb 1838.
Field notes say the surveys are made by virtue of the balance of John Bowie's certificate No. 135 for 369 acres, and the 62-acre notes call it his augmentation certificate. The certificate itself is not in the file; the jacket cross-refers to 'Cert & other Sur. see File 1121 Rob. 1'.
The survey
8 Jun 1870, B. W. Bailey, County Surveyor for Navarro County.
Navarro County, about 14 3/4(?) miles W of Corsicana on the waters of Richland Creek (the miles figure is rewritten in red ink over an earlier figure; red ink also adds the bearing S 84°)
Chain carriers: Thos. Purcel(l), Jno. Barnet(t).
Book C, page 44
The survey
7 Jun 1870, B. W. Bailey, County Surveyor for Navarro County.
Navarro County, about 9 3/4(?) miles N 58 W of Corsicana on the waters of Chambers Creek (red ink writes 9 3/4 over 12 and 58 over the original bearing, and corrects several corner calls)
Chain carriers: J. Johnson, J. M. Elliott.
Book C, page 42
The patent
1870-12-24(?) for 62 acres (Abst. 64); 1871-01-03 for 28 acres (Abst. 65), No. 308, Vol. 18 (62 acres); No. 311, Vol. 18 (28 acres), to John Bowie, delivered to not stated.
Also in the file
- Index gives 3 Jan 1871 for both patents; the jacket gives 24 Dec 1870 (or 27 Dec 1870) for No. 308 (62 acres) and 3 Jan 1871 for No. 311 (28 acres).
- The original certificate is not in the file; a note refers to file 1121, Robertson 1st.
- The certificate is called a headright balance of 369 acres but is also described as an augmentation certificate.
- Both surveys were made on consecutive days in June 1870 in distant parts of the county (Richland Creek and Chambers Creek).
- Index shows 62 acres for Abst. 64 (No. 308) and 28 acres for Abst. 65 (No. 311).
