What the file shows
John R. Shultz held Mercer's Colony Certificate No. 472 for 320 acres, issued by colony commissioner John M. Crockett on 29 April 1850; after part was located elsewhere, the Land Office issued him a certificate on 27 September 1853 for the 133-acre unlocated balance. Deputy surveyor Milton Wright located the 133 acres on 6 July 1857 on the waters of Mill and Richland Creeks about 20 miles west of Corsicana, between the Ledbetter and John Jacobs surveys and the Navarro County school league. Shultz's right passed to R. W. Gray (the transfer is filed with Nacogdoches file 1741), and the patent issued to Gray on 9 October 1860 (No. 546, Vol. 30), forwarded to Arvin(?) Wright in April 1862.
The certificate
No. 3045/3146 (GLO unlocated-balance certificate); original Mercer's Colony Certificate No. 472, Class 3rd, 133 (unlocated balance of 320), J. Crosby, Commissioner, General Land Office (balance certificate); original issued by John M. Crockett, Commissioner [of Mercer's Colony], Austin (balance certificate), 1853-09-27 (balance certificate); original colony certificate dated 1850-04-29.
Certificate entitling John R. Shultz to survey 133 acres of vacant public domain, 'being the unlocated balance of Mercer's Colony Certificate No. 472, Class 3rd', issued to him for 320 acres on 29 April 1850.

The patent
9 Oct 1860, No. 546, Vol. 30, to R. W. Gray, assignee, delivered to Arvin(?) Wright, April 8/62 (patent forwarded).
Also in the file
- This was a leftover 133 acres from a 320-acre Mercer's Colony certificate; the rest of the certificate and the sale to R. W. Gray are kept in a Nacogdoches file, so this Navarro tract's paper trail is split across two counties' records.
- The patent was mailed to Arvin(?) Wright in 1862, not to Gray, and the surveyor (Milton Wright) and a chain carrier (A. Wright) were also Wrights.
