What the file shows

Charles L. Jones received Mercer Colony certificate No. 19 for 320 acres from the Kaufman County District Court on 16 May 1856, and the next day sold it to George H. Cunningham for $128. A deputy surveyor located it on 17 September 1857 on the waters of Richland Creek, about 19 miles southwest of Corsicana, next to Thos. P. Sheppard, J. C. McCristian and the Navarro County school land. The Land Office noted it covered a forfeited Thos. S. Baxter survey, passed it, and issued the patent to Cunningham as assignee in June 1861, delivered to J. B. Hollingsworth on 1 August 1861.

The certificate

No. 19, 320 acres, District Court of Kaufman County, Spring Term 1856 (John H. Reagan, Judge 9th Judicial District; attest J. T. Kayel(?), Clerk), Town of Kaufman, 16 May 1856.

Mercer Colony certificate entitling Charles L. Jones to 320 acres of unappropriated vacant public domain within the limits of the colony granted to Charles Fenton Mercer and associates; the transfer says it was issued 'by virtue of settlement in Mercer's Colony'
