Winkler
Navarro County, Texas
Winkler sits on Farm Road 416 on the Navarro-Freestone county line, about four miles from Walker Lake. It was founded around 1879 and named for Judge Clinton M. Winkler; by 1882 it had seventy-five people, three general stores, a gin and two steam gristmills, and it peaked at about a hundred fifty residents in 1925. It has since settled at a small, steady population, twenty-six people as of the most recent count, one of the few communities on this list still standing rather than emptied out.
