Providence

Navarro County, Texas

Just off U.S. 287, three miles west of Eureka, Providence was probably established before 1900 and named for an early local church. Its school enrolled forty-three students in 1906, and the mid-1930s community held a school, a store, a church, a cemetery and a number of houses. The store closed after the war and the school consolidated into Mildred's; by the mid-1960s only the church, cemetery and a few scattered houses were left.
